GHCA Annual Luncheon Featuring Aldo Annese, Aurora Studio Project: Commitment to Do Good

The Greater Houston Coffee Association hosted its annual luncheon on October 15, 2019, and featured guest speaker Aldo Annese, Director I&D of Aurora Studio Project. Annese flew in from Guatemala City, Guatemala for the event. Aurora Studio Project, part of Cepaglobal, is a best practice authentication program for business processes in Guatemala with a commitment to “do good”.

Aurora Studio Project’s goal is to “achieve profitability, excellence, economic and social growth, by maintaining a long term, friendly and equitable relationship with people, the community and the environment.” Annese discussed one of the Aurora’s success stories: improving lives and the regional economy in Verapaz, Guatemala, through the coffee industry. Verapaz is home to 529,000 individuals without basic literacy, which limits their ability to pursue education. The region is impoverished with high rates of poverty, leading to high migration from the farms into the marginal urban areas.

Annese and Aurora have worked with the local farmers to “create a sustainable system, with education for all, that is committed to bringing support to the associate’s family.” Aurora helps coffee producers reach their target markets directly, which dramatically increases the income that the coffee producers receive for their crops. Then, by educating the coffee producers and their communities on how to better spend and invest their earnings, the entire community can improve their standard of living. So far, farmers have sold 288,000 pounds of coffee using this system.

Annese closed the presentation with a challenge to the audience to “be a coffee seed in the hearts of the farmer and his community, being a part of their well-being and growth, committed for the good.”

The Greater Houston Coffee Association’s 2019 Annual Luncheon will be held on October 15, 2019, at the Houston Marriott South at Hobby Airport.

The keynote speaker is Aldo Annese,Director of I&D of Aurora Studio Project, a best practice authentication program for business processes in Guatemala.

Mr. Annese was born in Guatemala and completed high school in Kansas. He began his career in the family business of footwear manufacturing, before obtaining his undergraduate degree and forming the Aldo Nero brand of footwear and accessories. Following his Masters degree at University of Barcelona, Mr. Annese became an entrepreneur, starting new companies and reengineering others.

After a health scare gave him a new perspective on life, Mr. Annese and his wife, Lucia, developed the M.A.C. (Mind – Soul – Body) philosophy in the Aurora Studio Project at Cepaglobal to do good, from seed to cup, in the coffee industry. He is working with small coffee farmers to implement business processes to empower them to sell their own coffee at fair prices.

Mr. Annese is an advisor to young entrepreneurs, a Director of Focus in the Family LATAM, former President of the Chamber of Tourism of Santa Ana, Costa Rica, and a managing director of several successful companies in the food, hospitality, manufacturing, real estate development, chemical, and coffee industries.

GHCA Announces 2019 Board of Directors

The GHCA Board of Directors approved updates to the 2019 Board of Directors on February 26, 2019.

Stephen Ferguson, Dupuy Houston, was voted onto the Board of Directors.

Amber Sheppard, Cadeco, was elected as 1st Vice President.

Registration closes soon for Nov. 13 Breakfast Seminar

Join the Coffee Association for its last Breakfast Seminar of 2018! Breakfast seminars are FREE to attend, but registration is required by Friday, Nov. 9.

FSVP inspections started in 2017 and will continue to increase. Mr. Valenzuela will provide an overview of the recently-implemented FSVP and its program requirements. Based on completed inspections, he will share some of the inspection results and recommendations for the importing community so that they can be better prepared.
